Episode 040

The old Pakistani war-horse, Nawaz Sharif, is back in power. The last time he ran the show, the army overthrew him and they just might be about to do it again. With a mass uprising involving millions of people on the streets alleging corruption, cronyism and incompetence, most Pakistanis think the protesters have a point. This street power may not have the international support of other demonstrations, but that doesn't mean it's doomed to fail. Joining us to make sense of it all is Murtaza Ali Shah, a UK-based Pakistani journalist and broadcaster.

And in part two, on the UNESCO day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, we turn our attention to the demonstrations on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, where thousands of African-Americans are protesting. But just how did so many Africans end up in America? Just like many black people in Britain, they are the descendants of slaves: men and women who were chained and shackled, thrown into the holds of leaking vessels and shipped across the sea to be sold as beasts of burden to white plantation owners. Those concerned made an unhealthy profit except for the slaves whose lives were difficult and short. So, against the backdrop of Ferguson Missouri, where some African Americans are still being metaphorically lynched by white overseers otherwise known as the police, we talk with historian, writer and Broadcaster S.I. Martin about the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
