Pentagon calls for Yemen ceasefire & US Treasury targets Venezuela & Nicaragua

Published 31 Oct, 2018 21:19

Anya Parampil reports on comments made this week by Defense Secretary James Mattis, who called for a ceasefire in Yemen to be implemented within 30 days. Hassan El-Tayyab of Chicago Area Peace Action joins Anya in studio to tell us why he believes this demand is coming now, considering the war is over 3 years old and has already left thousands of civilians dead. Hassan and Anya also discuss what the US could do if it were serious about ending the bloodshed, noting the fact Washington supplies the Saudi-led coalition with the weapons and mid-air refueling which make the war possible. Next Anya dissects a recent speech made by senior Treasury official Marshall Billingslea at the Brookings Institution in which he claims governments in Venezuela and Nicaragua “threaten the integrity” of the international financial system. Anya exposes the banking and oil interests which fund Brookings and breaks down Billingslea’s misleading statements regarding the death toll from anti-government demonstrations in Nicaragua and Venezuela. Gloria La Riva, an organizer with the anti-war ANSWER Coalition joins Anya to discuss the role think tanks and NGOs play in supporting US regime-change goals in Latin America as well as disturbing reports which suggest Brazil may take military action against Venezuela under the leadership of President-Elect Jair Bolsonaro.
