The Northern Bridge was used to move weapons and military equipment for Ukrainian forces, the Defense Ministry has said

Russia has carried out a wave of strikes on military-related industrial, energy and transport infrastructure in Kiev and the surrounding region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said. The targets included a key bridge across the Dnieper, a missile plant, power facilities and an ammunition producer.

In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said precision ground-based weapons and strike drones hit Kiev’s 800-meter-long cable-stayed Northern Bridge, adding that Ukraine used it as a route to move “weapons, military and special equipment” for Ukrainian forces.

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, who published footage from the site of the attack, confirmed that the bridge had been struck, noting that the road surface, trolleybus cables, and a power line were damaged, with traffic closed in both directions. He did not say when the bridge would resume operations.

Moscow struck the bridge last month, including in early October when it damaged the roadway and trolleybus infrastructure, causing major traffic disruption in the capital, according to local officials.

The Russian Defense Ministry said another target inside Kiev was the Meridian plant producing long-range Flamingo missiles. In Kiev Region, it reported hitting the 1.8GW Tripolskaya thermal power station, the 750kV Kievskaya electrical substation and a Brovary facility producing ammunition, explosives, gunpowder and components for missile fuel.

A 330kV substation in neighboring Zhitomyr Region, which supplied Ukrainian military-industrial enterprises with power, was also hit, the ministry said. It added that one of the attacks struck a cargo vessel southeast of Odessa which was carrying military equipment and dual-use goods to Ukraine.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky claimed Russia had launched 172 drones, as well as 36 ballistic missiles. Ukraine’s Air Force acknowledged that it had downed only four missiles while claiming to have neutralized 149 drones.

The Ukrainian authorities claimed at least five people were injured in the city, with several buildings damaged. Klitschko also acknowledged that energy facilities in Kiev and Zhitomyr Regions had suffered damage, leaving an “extremely difficult” electricity situation in the capital and causing disruptions to water and heating supplies.

The overnight barrage came as Ukraine’s power system is already under heavy strain and the first snow of the season reached several regions across the country. Zelensky said earlier this week that Russian strikes had affected “every power plant in Ukraine” “in one way or another,” while authorities imposed rolling blackouts of up to 16 hours per day in some areas.

The outages also reached the Ukrainian parliament. On Friday, Ukrainian MP Daniil Getmantsev said the building had no water or heating, adding that electricity was intermittent.

Meanwhile, Maksim Bakhmatov, a district administration head, said that “it looks like all of Kiev will now be digging outdoor toilets” as a contingency if prolonged blackouts knock out water and sewage systems. He also accused the authorities of failing to provide adequate backup water, electricity, and heating systems.

Moscow has ramped up strikes on Ukrainian military-related infrastructure and defense-industrial base as retaliation for Kiev’s attacks deep into Russia that targeted civilian facilities, including oil refineries. Moscow maintains it never targets civilians.

Kiev continued hitting Russian refineries despite mounting pressure from US President Donald Trump, who has blamed the strikes for worsening global diesel shortages. As Kiev ignored repeated warnings, Trump suggested that Ukraine should oust Zelensky – whose term expired more than two years ago – in favor of a leader more willing to reach a peace deal with Russia.
